O Holy Spirit, may these passages give us hope, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for our daily life           Chinese text

Reading:  Joshua 10

Five kings in the southern part of the land made war on Gibeon.
The Gibeonites appealed to Joshua for help.

Joshua and his soldiers marched through the night
and caught the armies of the 5 kings by surprise
and defeated them.

The Israelite army also attacked other southern towns
and captured them.

Joshua and his army were victorious in the south
because the Lord supported and helped them

Reflection: 
Maybe sometimes we are not "victorious" because we haven't asked for the Lord's help

Prayer:  Dear God, please help me in the battles of life

Reading: Psalm 31

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress.
My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow.

Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me.
Save me, Lord, from this mess.

I praise you Lord, for you protect those who trust you.
You keep them safe from slander and lies.

Be strong, let your heart take courage,
all you who  trust in the Lord

Reflection:
In late 1598, in Beijing, at a time of war with Japan in Korea...a time of anti-foreign sentiment in Beijing, 
"so nervous did many officials become about being associated with foreigners, that some old friends, and others to whom Ricci had letters of introduction, did not want to be publicly associated with him"  (Andrew Ross,  A Vision Betrayed  - The Jesuits in Japan and China, 1542-1742 - p. 133)

Prayer: Jesus, when people don't want to know me, please increase my trust in you

Reading:  James 5

Are you rich and powerful? Then start weeping for the  miseries that are coming your way

Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are being eaten by moths.
And your body also will soon be corroding in a burning fire

You cheated your workers. You lived a life of luxury 
without any care for people who were suffering

You condemned and killed the innocent

Reflection: 
As today's rich people become ever richer, at the expense of the poor, the above words from James need to be shouted from the rooftops

Prayer:  Jesus, please give uncaring rich and powerful people 
a change of heart

Reading:  John 6

The people said among themselves  "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

Jesus replied "If you refuse to eat my flesh , and drink my blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life

For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them

As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me

This is the bread come down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever"

Reflection:
Most people in the world have never made their "First Communion"
....in 2014.....after 2,000 years of evangelisation

Prayer: Jesus, may everyone in the world have the chance to receive your Body and Blood
