Reading:  One Samuel 1

Each year, Elkanah and his two wives Hannah and Peninnah,  went to Shiloh to worship the Lord.

Peninnah had children, but Hannah was barren.
Each year at the temple,
Peninnah would taunt Hannah because she was barren.

One year at the temple, Hannah prayed in great distress:
"God, if you give me a child, I will dedicate him to you".

Not long after, Hannah conceived a son whom she called "Samuel".

When Samuel was weaned, she took him to the temple
and gave him to the priest there to serve the Lord
for the rest of his life.

Reflection:
"El" is short for Elohm, meaning "God".
"Samu" means "name".
So "Samuel" means "Name of God".
If you meet a person named Sam, see if they know the beautiful meaning of their name

Prayer:  Dear God, please bless all woman who are unable to have a baby

Reading:  Psalm 78

Listen, everyone, to my teaching.
I will recount the lessons of our history.

The things  our parents have told us,
we will not hide from our children,
but will pass them on to the next generation.

We want the next generation to know
all that the Lord has done for us in the past.

May the next generation in turn
pass on this knowledge to their own children,
so that they too will put their hope in God
and never forget all that God has done for us.

May future generations not be like our ancestors
who so often were unfaithful to God.

Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea,
even though they had seen him provide food and water for them
in the desert, still they went on sinning.

Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them.
He remembered they were only weak humans.

Eventually he brought them to the promised land
and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.

But still they sinned by building mountain shrines
and serving idols.

Then God raised up David to be their leader.
God called him from looking after sheep
to be the shepherd of his people.

Reflection:
The basic responsibility of parents and teachers:
to pass on the knowledge of God to the next generation.
c.f. a basketball or football coach: "Pass the ball. Pass it!"

Prayer:
Lord, help us to pass on the knowledge of your love to the next generation

Reading:  One John 2

Anyone who claims to be in the light
but hates his brother
is still in the dark

Do not love the ungodly values of this world
generated by the sensual body,
the lustful eye
and a  pride in possessions

Such things do not come from God

Reflection:
Pope Francis is trying to encourage us away from ungodly values
....in our world where secular values are replacing spiritual values

Prayer:  Jesus, please help me avoid worldly values

Reading:  John 13

Jesus said to his disciples at the meal
"I give you a new commandment: love one another.
Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another

By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples"

Reflection:
Not a recommendation, not an invitation, not a suggestion
....but ....a COMMANDMENT.   Breaking this commandment is just as serious as breaking the 10 Commandments

Prayer:
Jesus, please help all Christians  to love one another as you have loved us
