Reading:  One Samuel 3

One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the temple,
the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel."

The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him
so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am."

Eli replied "I did not call you."

Two more times the Lord called.
Both times the boy went to Eli.

Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel.
Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening"
the next time he heard the voice.

The Lord told Samuel that Eli's family would be punished
for the bad things they had done.

The people quickly found out that the Lord was with Samuel
and that Samuel was the Lord's prophet.

Reflection:
The people's inbuilt "authenticity radar" sensed that Samuel was a genuine prophet ....just as people sense a genuine politician/parent/teacher/pastor

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice,
your voice in my conscience, in the Bible, and in other people

Reading:  Psalm 81

Ring out your joy to God our strength,
shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.

Listen to the voice of the Lord:

"I am the Lord your God
who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Let there be no foreign god among you,
no worship of a false god.

O that my people would heed me,
that Israel would
walk in my ways.

At once I would subdue their foes.
But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".

Reflection:
Daily Bible reading is one basic way of "listening to the voice of the Lord", "heeding the Lord", "walking in the Lord's way"

Prayer:
Lord, please help us to walk in your ways, especially by our love for Bible reading

Reading:  One John 3

This has taught us love:
that Jesus gave up his life for us.
We too should give up our lives for others

If you see someone in need
and refuse to help him,
how can the love of God be in you?

Our love must be put into practice, not be just words.
Anyone who loves God must also love other people

Reflection:
The more our love for God is genuine, the more we will be willing to help people in need

Prayer: Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

Reading:  John 14

At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "To have seen me, is to have seen the Father. I am in the Father, and the Father is in me

Whatever you ask for in my name, I will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you love me, you will keep my commandments

I will ask the Father and he will give you another Friend to be always with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth who will be living in your heart

If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home in his heart"

Reflection & Prayer: (a song the HK prisoners love to sing)

Jesus, live in my heart
