Reading:  One Samuel 5

The Philistines took the captured Sacred Chest
to the shrine of Dagon in one of their towns.

Next morning, they found the statue of Dagon
on its face on the ground, in front of the Sacred Chest.

They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place.
But next morning he was down again,
with his head and hands cut off from the rest of his body.

While the Sacred Chest was in the Philistine town,
the people there were struck with tumors and many people died.

The people told their leaders to take the Sacred Chest
back to Israel where it belonged.

Reflection:
Dagon
had quite a following in the ancient world

Prayer:  Dear God, please help everyone know
that there is no other God but you

Reading:  Psalm 84

How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord.
My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling.

Even sparrows  and swallows are your temple guests.
They build homes for their young near your altar.

Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple.
And blessed, too, are people who keep  the memory of your temple in their hearts.

As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day.

Lord, one day within your temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else.

Reflection:
God is everywhere...in Heaven...in our hearts...in the poor....in the Bible
....but in a very special way God is present in a church or other place of prayer

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

Reading:  One John 4-5

Anyone who says "I love God"
but hates his brother, is a liar

A man who does not love the brother he can see
cannot love God whom he has never seen

Who can overcome the world?
Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God

God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in his Son

You who believe in the Son of God
have eternal life

Reflection:
Pope Francis has many times quoted the above words as he tries to help Christians understand that genuine love of God must be accompanied by a willingness to be reconciled with others

Prayer: Jesus, please increase my love for you ......and for the poor

Reading:  John 15

At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love by keeping my commandments, especially this commandment: love one another, as I have loved you

A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends"

Reflection:
Imitating Jesus' love means coming down from our high horses and mixing with the poor .... to put it bluntly

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for loving us. Help us to love one another as you have loved us
