Reading:  One Samuel 9-10

Among the men of the tribe of Benjamin
there was a very tall and very handsome man named Saul.

Once when he went in search of his father's stray donkeys,
he met up with Samuel.

The Lord had told Samuel that he would meet Saul,
and that he should be anointed as king.

And so Samuel took some oil and poured it on Saul's head.
He told Saul that the Lord had chosen him to be king.

Samuel presented Saul to the people.
The people acclaimed Saul saying "Long live the king!"

Reflection:
Such was the beginning of the Jewish monarchy ....a monarchy which would find its fulfillment in the Baby of Bethlehem

Prayer: Dear Lord, please protect and guide all people in authority, especially all monarchs

Reading:  Psalm 88

Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help.
Please turn your ear to my cry.

For my soul is filled with evils.
My life is on
the brink of the grave.

I am reckoned as one in the tomb.
I have reached the end of my strength.

Will your love be told in the grave?
Will your wonders be known in the dark?

Fear surrounds  me like a flood.
They keep on assailing me.

All my friends have deserted me.
My only companion is darkness.

Reflection:
On the brink of the grave: people in the final stage of terminal cancer; people tempted by suicide; people ravaged by drugs.

No friends: many drug addicts, AIDS patients, street sleepers, prisoners. We can use Ps 88 on their behalf

Prayer: Jesus, please help people who are at the end of their strength, people who are friendless. May they know your strength and peace. May they know your friendship

Reading:  Revelation 1

From John, to the seven churches of Asia province:
grace and peace to you
from him who is, who was, and who is to come,
from the seven spirits at his throne,
and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness,
the First-born from the dead,
the Ruler of the kings of the earth

Jesus Christ loves us and has washed away our sins with this blood, and made us a line of kings and priests to serve his God and Father

It is he who will come on the clouds.
Everyone, in every part of the world, will see him.
All hearts will be moved by his coming

"I am the beginning and the end", says the Lord God.
"I am the originator and goal of all things"

Reflection:
Reading from Samuel, above, describes the choice of Saul as king.
This reading, from Revelation, says how Jesus is the Ruler of all kings ...King of kings....and ....has made us kings ("a line of kings"). All Christians are monarchs!

Prayer:
Jesus, please help more deeply understand how you have upgraded us

Reading:  John 20-21    (Chapters 18-19 will be kept for Lent 2015)

Jesus did many other things.  If all of them were written down, so many books would be needed that no library could hold them all

This book has been written to help you believe that Jesus is the Saviour, the Son of God.  Through your faith in Jesus, may you have eternal life

Reflection:
The purpose of John's Gospel: to help us have faith in Jesus as the Saviour, the Son of God, and through that faith to have eternal life

Prayer:
Jesus, Son of God, thank you for John's Gospel.
May more and more people know you and love you
