O Holy Spirit, may these passages give us hope, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for our daily life           Chinese text

Reading:  One Samuel 16

The Lord told Samuel to go to Bethlehem
and anoint one of Jesse's sons as king.

Samuel anointed Jesse's son David as king.

The spirit of the Lord came down on David
and stayed with him from that day on.

Reflection:
The Holy Spirit inspired David to compose dozens of Psalms that are now used throughout the world.
In recent years the same Spirit has inspired a simple farm girl in China to compose hundreds of songs that are now used throughout China and beyond. This moving documentary tells the story

Prayer: Dear God, may your Holy Spirit
come down on more and more people ...especially people like Xiaomin

Reading:  Psalm 92

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High,

to proclaim your love in the morning,
and your truth right through the night.

Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad.
For the work of your hands, I shout with joy.

To me you give the wild ox's strength.
You anoint me with the purest oil.

May we love and praise you right through our lives,
right till the end of our days.

May we keep on proclaiming your goodness,
proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.

Reflection:
How readily and rightly we praise people who have done something special, like winning an Olympic medal.
How readily and rightly we should praise our Creator who made the universe and gave us life

Prayer: Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Reading:  Revelation 2

He gave me this message for the church in Pergamum:

"I know you live in a place where idol worship is strong.
I know you have stayed faithful, even after one of you was killed

But some of you have compromised yourselves by eating food sacrificed to idols.
And some of you have followed false teachers

Listen to this message and repent"

Reflection:
More and more places in our world can be described as places where staying faithful is not supported by surrounding circumstances

Prayer:
Jesus, please help me stay faithful, despite lack of support in the world around me

Reading:  Matthew 5

Jesus said to the crowds:

Blessed are poor and simple of heart  people.
They belong to the kingdom of heaven .

Blessed are people who are going through great sorrow.
Their hearts will be filled with peace.

Blessed are people who lead just and honest lives.
They will see the victory of goodness.

Blessed are people who show mercy to others.
God will be merciful to them.

Blessed are people who have a clean heart.
They will see God.

Blessed are people who are peacemakers.
They are God's children.

Blessed are people who are persecuted for the cause of right.
They will receive a great reward in heaven.

Reflection:
If someone asks us "what is Christianity all about?", one excellent answer is "Christianity is all about trying to put the above words into practice"

Prayer:
Jesus, please help me put the above words into practice, despite lack of support sometimes in the world around me
