O Holy Spirit, may these passages give us hope, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for our daily life           Chinese text

Reading:  One Samuel 19

Saul's son Jonathan urged his father not to hate David,
but Saul again tried to kill David, this time with a spear.

David then escaped from his home
and went to live with Samuel at Ramah.

Three times Saul sent men to capture David.
Each time they were overcome by the spirit of the Lord
and they went into an ecstasy.

Then Saul himself went to Ramah
and he too went into ecstasy.

Reflection:
Sometimes some people say there's not much humor in the Bible. But when you look below the surface, there are many stories (like the story of Jonah) which are full of humor. And the story above about Saul also has a place in a file called "Bible humor"

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please protect people
who are being unfairly treated by others

Reading:  Psalm 95

Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us.

Let us come before him giving thanks.
With songs let us praise the Lord.

A mighty God is the Lord,
a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth.
The heights of the mountains are his.

To him belongs the sea, for he made it,
and the dry land shaped by his hands.

Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.

For he is our God
and we are the people who belong to his pasture.

Reflection:
To God belong the sea and the mountains. We are related to the sea and the mountains and the trees and the animals ....since we all come from God.  We can indeed speak about "Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Brother Flower, Sister Fish etc"

Prayer: Lord, our Creator, help us see that all creatures are cousins

Reading:  Revelation 3

He gave me this message for the church in Philadelphia:

"I am opening a new door of opportunity for you
to spread the Good News

I will move people to accept the Good News from you.
I will keep you safe in time of trial"

Reflection:
"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us"
- Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the telephone)

Prayer: Jesus, please give me more opportunities to spread the Good News

Reading:  Matthew 6

Jesus said to the crowds:

When you do a good deed,
do it for its own sake, not just to get people to praise you.

When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart.
Don't be looking for people to notice and praise you.

When you pray, there's no need to rave on and on.
God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case.
Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this:

Our Father in heaven,
may everyone love and honor you.

Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Thank you for enough food for today.
Forgive us as we forgive others.

Save us in time of trial.
Protect us from evil

Reflection:
When Jesus himself prayed, he didn't "rave on and on" or argue like a lawyer.
He spoke to his Father in simple words, with child-like trust

Prayer:
Jesus,  help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father", you are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"
