Reading:  Two Samuel 10-11

The Ammonites went to war with the Israelites,
but David led the Israelites to victory.

During a further war with the Ammonites,
David stayed in Jerusalem and did not go to the battle.

While in Jerusalem, he made love to Bathsheba the wife of Uriah
who conceived and sent word to David, "I am with child."

David recalled Uriah to Jerusalem
and tried to get him to sleep with his wife.

But Uriah loyally observed the custom of the time
and refrained from marital relations since he was a soldier at war.

David then arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle
by having him stationed in a defenceless position.

After a time of mourning for Uriah,
Bathsheba became David's wife and bore him a son.

The Lord was displeased with David.

Reflection:
Even though he'd received great blessings from God, David sinned.
Even though he'd received great blessings from God, Peter sinned.
Even though we've received great blessings from God, we sin.

Prayer:
Dear God, if/when we sin, help us to repent ....like David and Peter

Reading:  Psalm 103

My soul, give thanks to the Lord.
All my being, bless his holy name.

My soul, give thanks to the Lord
and never forget all his blessings.

It is he who forgives all your guilt,
who heals every one of your ills.

It is he who fills your life with good things,
renewing your youth like an eagle's life.

The Lord is compassion and love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy.

As the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who fear him.

As far as the East is from the West,
so far does he remove our sins.

As a father has compassion on his sons,
the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him.

Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels,
who heed the voice of his word.

Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord!

Reflection:
This is one of the most beautiful psalms....good to use often, especially at times of thanksgiving

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Reading:  Revelation 12

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels

Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven

The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan,
was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him

The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman
 - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus

Reflection:
Confronting the Devil's power (Pope Paul VI)

Prayer: Jesus, may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Reading:  Matthew 8

Jesus went to the home of Peter the "fisher of men".
Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever.

Jesus touched her hand, and the fever left her.
She got up and began to serve her visitor.

That evening,
many sick people were brought to Peter's home.
Jesus healed them all.

Reflection: The Gospels of Mark and Luke say that this story happened on the Sabbath, during which people were not allowed (by current Jewish laws) to do much walking, which explains why the sick were brought after sunset.

Prayer:
Jesus, please heal .....(names)....who are sick
