Reading:  Two Samuel 13

David had many wives and concubines.
One of his sons, Amnon, fell in love with his step-sister Tamar
and raped her.

King David was very angry about this
but did not punish Amnon, since he loved him.
Amnon was his first-born son.

But another son, Absalom, Tamar's full brother,
hated Amnon and killed him.

Absalom fled for three years to another land.
All that time the king mourned for Amnon.

Reflection:
Because of David's adultery and murder, he was told by the prophet Nathan that "the sword will never be far from your house" (2 Samuel 12, 10).

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please spare my family from conflict and strife

Reading:  Psalm 10

Give thanks to the Lord,
make known his deeds among all the peoples.

O sing to him, sing his praise.
Tell all his wonderful works.

Be proud of his holy name.
Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

Consider the Lord and his strength.
Constantly seek his face.

Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past,
how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.

Reflection:
One thing that helped the Jewish people to face the present and the future, was to remember the past. Especially when they were in big trouble, they would remember the goodness of God in their history.
Not that they "lived in the past". But with grateful hearts they daily meditated on God's goodness to them in the past, and this calmed their hearts, and gave courage to their hearts to face the fears and problems of the present and the future

Prayer: Dear God, please help me better understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

Reading:  Revelation 14

I saw an angel flying high in the sky,  sent to announce
the Good News of eternity to every nation, race, language and tribe

He was calling: "Honor God and praise him.
Worship the maker of heaven and earth and sea.
The time has come for him to judge the world"

A voice from heaven said to me
"Happy are those who are the Lord's friends when they die. Now they can rejoice for ever, since their
good deeds go with them"

Reflection:
The one thing we can take with us when we leave this world: good deeds

Prayer: Jesus, may I live, grow and die in your friendship

Reading:  Matthew 9

Some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus.
The man was on a bed.

Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them,
so he said to the paralyzed man "Courage, your sins are forgiven".

Religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves
that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins.

So Jesus said to the leaders: Which is easier:
to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?

Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins,
he said to the paralyzed man
"Get up, pick up your bed and go home".

The man got up and went home.
The crowd praised God for what they had seen.

Reflection:
This was one of the rare occasions when Jesus said there was a link between sickness and sin

Prayer:
Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive,
 your power to heal
