Reading:  One Kings 4-5

Solomon enjoyed peace with all his neighbouring countries.
He was blessed by God with great wisdom and understanding.

He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs.
People from all nations went to hear Solomon's wisdom.

Solomon made preparations for building a temple for the Lord.

Hiram, king of Tyre, made a treaty with Solomon.
Hiram provided wood for building the temple.

Reflection:
Does today's world have a Solomon? Who is he/she? Where is he/she?

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give our leaders good health, courage and wisdom

Reading:  Psalm 112

Happy are people who love and honor the Lord,
who take delight in his commands.
The children of such people will be blessed.

Such people are a light in the darkness for others.
Such people are generous, merciful and just.

They take pity and help those in need.
They conduct their affairs with  integrity.

Open-handed they give to the poor.
Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.

Reflection:
Again and again the Old Testament repeats the message that a good Jew, a good person, is one who cares about the poor. Not just someone who says lots of prayers and observes special feast days .... that is good, but it should go hand in hand with concern for the poor...otherwise it's not real goodness.  Pope Francis now saying the same thing: "help the poor"

Prayer:  Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Reading:  Revelation 21

Then the One sitting on the throne said
"Now I am making the whole of creation new.
I am the Beginning and the End

I give Eternal Life to all who die in my friendship

But for those whose evil deeds have removed themselves from my friendship, there is Eternal Death"

Reflection:
Most people hope that God has a Plan B, whereby Eternal Death people will somehow, somewhere get another chance to become Eternal Life people

Prayer: Jesus, have mercy on people who are rejecting your friendship - as you had mercy on St Paul

Reading:  Matthew 10

Many men followed Jesus as "fishers of men", as "disciples".
Jesus chose 12 of them and called them "apostles":

Peter and his brother Andrew
Zebedees' sons
James and John;
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew;
James son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus, Simon and Judas.

Jesus sent them to prepare his way by visiting the places he would go.
He gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of sicknesses.

He said to them:
Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near. Cure the sick.
Raise the dead. Cleanse lepers. Cast out devils.

Reflection:
Curing the sick is part of a pastor's portfolio

Prayer:  Jesus, please help all Christians to be apostles and fishers of people, and may all pastors have the gift of praying for healing of the sick
