Leviticus 16, 17

Instructions for the annual Day of Atonement:

Once a year Aaron or his successor must wear special vestments
and enter the sanctuary  past the veil.

Then he is to offer two goats to pray for atonement
for the whole community of Israel.

One goat will be sacrificed in the Temple;
the other is to be set free to go out into the desert -
a symbol of the people's sins being carried away.
(this story gives us the English word: "scapegoat")

Dear God, please forgive us,  and help us to forgive others

Psalm 116

I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him.

They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me.

Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Romans 2

People become holy in God's sight by doing what is right.
Listening to God's Law is not enough.
We have to put it into practice in our lives

Non-Jewish people who follow a good conscience and do what is right,
have God's Law engraved on their hearts

What matters is not circumcision of the body,
but circumcision of the heart.
The real Jew is one who is a Jew in his heart

Jesus, help me to love you with all my heart.
May my love for you not be just something external, but something real, in my heart

John 12  (today's Gospel at Mass)

Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany,
for a dinner at  the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha

Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet.
Then she wiped his feet with her hair

Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus,
said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?"

He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.
He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it

Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial.
Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone"

Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal
