Joshua 10

Five kings in the southern part of the land made war on Gibeon.
The Gibeonites appealed to Joshua for help.

Joshua and his soldiers marched through the night
and caught the armies of the 5 kings by surprise
and defeated them.

The Israelite army also attacked other southern towns
and captured them.

Joshua and his army were victorious in the south
because the Lord supported and helped them

Dear God, please help me in the battles of life

Psalm 46

(c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God",
and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God")

God is for us a refuge and strength,
in time of distress he is a helper close at hand.

Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock,
even though the mountains fall into the sea.

The Lord of hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Come and consider the works of the Lord
and always remember his words:

"Be still and know that I am God".

Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence,
especially when we are in trouble

Galatians 4

When the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman,
born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law,
and to enable us to be adopted as children of God, brothers and sisters of his Son

The proof that we are children is that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts:
the Spirit that cries "Abba, Father"

Jesus, help me understand how I have been adopted,
how you are my Brother

Mark 16

Jesus died on Friday afternoon.
Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb
to anoint his body with spices

They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone,
but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away

When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe.
But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he  will see them in Galilee"

Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember
how you rose from the dead....and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation
