One Kings 12-16

After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king.
The people asked Rehoboam not to be harsh like Solomon.
Solomon had imposed heavy taxes and enforced labor

Rehoboam asked the elders for advice.
They said "Treat the people kindly and they will serve you."

Rehoboam asked his peers for advice.
They said "Treat the people more harshly than your father."

Rehoboam accepted the advice of his peers.
Therefore the people of Israel rejected him as king.
Only the people of Judah accepted him.

The people of Israel made Jeroboam king.
He had previously led an unsuccessful revolt against Solomon.

Rehoboam and Jeroboam died and were succeeded
by various kings who ruled over Judah and Israel.

Dear God, please help leaders be kind to their people

Psalm 128

O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.

By the labor of your hands you shall eat.
You will be happy and prosper:

your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive, around your table.

Indeed thus shall be blessed
the people who love and honor the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life.
May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem!

On Israel, peace!

Dear Lord, may all married people
live to see their children's children

2 Thessalonians 3

Pray that the Lord's message may spread quickly,
and be received with honor as it was by yourselves

Pray that we may be protected from the interference of bigoted people

May your hearts focus on the love of God our Father
and the fortitude of Christ

Jesus, don't let bigoted people influence me

Luke 12

Jesus said to his disciples "Do not worry about food and clothing

As regards food, think of  the birds. They don't sow or reap,
and they have no homes to store things. Yet God feeds them

As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks after the flowers

So, don't set your hearts on food and drink. Don't go in for worry.
Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and drink and clothing will not be a problem

Where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be too

Jesus, please help me to put your friendship as number one in my life
