O Holy Spirit, please guide me as I read these passages for today. 
May these passages give me hope, strength, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for my daily life 

Holofernes not only ignored Achior's advice, 
he ridiculed him for suggesting that the Israelites could resist his army.

Holofernes then handed Achior over to the Israelites 
"to suffer the same punishment as they would receive from Holofernes' army."

Dear God, when people ridicule us for speaking the truth,
 please give us strength and courage

O Lord, please save me from people who slander me,
you who rescue the weak from the strong,

you whose love is so precious,
you in whose light we see light.

We believe that if we find our delight in you,
you will grant our heart's desire.

And so we commit our lives to you,
confident you will help us in time of trouble.

Lord, please deepen our trust in you,
especially in time of trouble

Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday 
and as he will be for ever

Do not let yourselves be led astray by strange doctrines
that teach a different Jesus

Jesus died outside the city. Let us go to him and share his rejection.

Our life in this world is a temporary arrangement, like a tent.
We look for a permanent home in the life to come

Keep doing good works and sharing your resources

God of peace you brought  Jesus back from the dead to be our great Shepherd and Priest. 
Make me ready to do your will in any kind of good action

John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people 
about the presence of the Word among them

When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied 
"I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord"

When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, 
John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 
He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born

I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. 
He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"

Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit
