First Maccabees 5-6

As the years went on, several nearby countries made war
on Israel.   But Judas and his followers used prayer and courage to defeat all enemies.

When King Antiochus heard of Judas' continued victories,
he became severely depressed and realized he was dying.

The king's son succeeded him and he too sent a huge army
against Israel.

This army also failed to defeat Judas.
The king then made peace with the Jews and for a time there was peace.

Dear God, please help all nations to live in peace

Psalm 84

How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord.
My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling.

Even sparrows  and swallows are your temple guests.
They build homes for their young near your altar.

Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple.
And blessed, too, are people who keep  the memory of your temple in their hearts.

As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day.

Lord, one day within your temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else.

Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

1 Peter 4

You spent enough time in the past living a careless life,
behaving indecently, drinking all the time, having wild parties

Now that you don't do these things anymore, people can't understand why you've changed,
and they tell lies about you

They will have to answer for this to him who will judge everyone at the end of their lives

Jesus, rescue young people from wild party life

John 7

Jesus now stayed in Galilee.
He could not stay in Judea because the religious leaders wanted to kill him

Not even his brothers believed in him

In Jerusalem, no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the religious leaders

Jesus, people were scared to talk about you, your brothers didn't believe in you,
and the leaders wanted to kill you. How small my  problems are compared with yours
