    Our Baptism

Many of us do not remember our day of Baptism into the Christian Community. At a few weeks or months, it was an occasion that demanded our presence and, apart from a reflex reaction to cold water descending on our heads, our participation was limited.

For others, baptised as adults, memory is stronger and our involvement a conscious decision.

Last Sunday, when we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord, we were all reminded of that occasion and asked to re-affirm our commitment.

We celebrate, each year, our birthday, the occasion when we achieved independence from our Mother’s nurturing care and brought joy to our family.

Would it not be a good idea to do the same for our anniversary of Baptism? And if we don’t know the date, then how about finding out?

As we approach the (Northern Hemisphere) week of prayer for Christian Unity, January 18th through January 25th, we should remember that it is in our Baptism that Christians have a shared belief, that all have been received into a new way, choosing the Way of life rather than the Way of Death, to quote the Didache, the subject of last week’s comment. Let all of us strive to be faithful to the community of faith that has been offered to us, the blessing of Father, Son and Spirit that all have received
