Dear Friends
Yesterday
I went to the Red Cross blood donation center near Queen Elizabeth Hospital in
Hong Kong.
I usually give blood each year on holidays back in Australia, but haven't given
in HK since 1994
...when I got the impression that my rare-in-Australia blood type (A Negative)
is even more rare in HK and there's no need for many donors.
But
last Saturday when I attended a Red Cross ceremony at which a fellow prison
chaplain
received a special community service award (...report coming...) a Red Cross
official explained
that there is now a shortage of A Neg donors
But
I wasn't able to make a donation. One question on the donor form asked
"Have you come into contact
with anyone with T.B. recently"....to which I had to answer "yes"
- last Friday at a detention centre hospital section...a 30 second
communication, wearing masks, through a locked cell door.
As
anyone knows who has filled in a donor questionnaire, the Red Cross people are
really, really careful.
They have to be....lives are at risk
As
I walked home I thought about the questionnaire's many references to male
same-sex relationships....and how
some advocates of same-sex marriage have argued that such questions are a case
of discrimination.
I
just checked Wikipedia....this is a complicated issue...called the
MSM Blood Donor Controversy.
