Dear Friends
Most
of my time at Lai Chi Kok Detention Centre yesterday afternoon
was spent visiting Chinese men in "Special Units"
= solitary confinement.
Some are there "for protection".
Some are there for disciplinary reasons.
Some men who are put in these units for a short time
actually enjoy "the quiet and peace"...away from the noisy rooms of 50
or more.
Outside many of these cells there's a sign saying "loss of privileges": no cigarettes/newspapers etc
All
of the men in these cells are well cared for by the staff.
All have regular meals + a daily "outing" for exercise (about 40
minutes in an exercise area).
It's
a bit like an old-time monastery: no alcohol, no women, no TV
....and only the Bible to read! (...and read it they do...)
