Dear Friends

Last Saturday night in the Temple Street Market near my home,
I saw a tea shirt with the words:
We used to have Steve Jobbs, Bob Hope and Johnny Cash.
Now we have no jobs, no hope and no cash

I was in the market for a couple of hours, wearing the Dr Jesus signs,
standing at the intersection of Temple St and another street,
feeling a bit like an idiot at first,
but then as I gave out the booklet "Dr J" (Chinese and English editions)
it was all worth while - especially when Mainland tourists took a copy

If any HK friends would like to try this exercise in humility/evangelization,
please let me know....I can give you a job any night!

Today is an public holiday in HK (transferred from yesterday, Sunday)
to mark the return of HK to China on July 1, 1997

Yesterday saw a huge number of people take part in the annual protest march

A few days ago in this blog, I speculated about the interaction of
1. An approaching typhoon
2. An approaching President Hu Jintao
3. An approaching annual protest march

They did interact: the typhoon caused President Hu to come to HK a day earlier than planned, which let him escape late yesterday morning (rather than later in the day as first planned), thereby missing the protest march

As I came home last night, having seen police out in force on the street for the departure of President Hu   and for the annual protest  march,  I began reflecting how Hong Kong these past few days reminds me of the Catholic Church:

People in charge are becoming more and more isolated as they hold  their functions/meetings with more and more censorship/police activity.

What a contrast yesterday in HK:

In the early morning an unpopular President Hu installing a most unpopular new chief-executive in a setting where the public and the media were denied free access.

Then from midday, a huge outpouring of public protest in the form of the annual protest march.

In one corner (literally) leaders behind guarded/censored closed doors.
In the other "corner", the media-supported people out on the streets.

c.f. Pope's recent  Lunch meeting in Ducal Hall
....far from the madding crowd

And never the twain shall meet?

On this 2nd of the month, Jesus please bless the people of Fujian
(Please join me in praying for one part of China each day of the month)

My Bible Plan for today = Many homes have a sign with the beautiful words from Joshua in today's Bible Plan:
"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord"

Thank you for a prayer

God bless!
