Dear Friends

Something like 2kg of cocaine wins you a 20 year holiday in a Hong Kong prison.
Up until last Friday the record haul by drug authorities was 567kg
....each week I visit four of the men involved in this case.

Last Friday a new record - 650kg
Next week I'll visit the new record holders

At the moment in Lai Chi Kok prison,
there are about 30 men from South America facing drug charges
- not the above cases, but smaller ones.
Nearly all of the 30 are from Columbia.
Nearly all of the Columbians are from one city, Pereira

According to this article, Pereira is an ordinary place.
According to the inmates, Pereira has record unemployment and a huge drug trade

About 90% of people bringing drugs to HK are caught at airport.
Anyone with a South American or African passport is given special attention
....yet still they come....the small fish....fooled into thinking they'll make easy money "for my family"

I asked the men, how can we tell people in Pereira
"Don't come HK; you bring drugs HK, you spend 20 years in prison"?

I said I'd contact church in Pereira...ask them to spread the message.
Men replied "There's a monsignor in Vatican who used to be in Pereira"

Wikipedia has this article about the mons....now Cardinal Hoyos
...a controversial figure ...but someone who seems to have at least tried to confront drug problem

He's 82 ...based in Rome.  I tried to fax him...number not working.
Posted letter last Tuesday.
Asked him to ask someone to write to the Lai Chi Kok men...get more details....
with aim of deterring people in Pereira from spending long holiday in HK

Enough for today....

------

On this 8th of the month, Jesus please bless the people of Heilongjiang
(Please join me in praying for one part of China each day of the month)

My Bible Plan for today = The readings for "the 14th Sunday of the Year"
Not the main theme, but Gospel reference to Jesus not being able to do much healing
because of people's lack of faith
encourages us to pray "Lord, please increase my faith!"

Thank you for a prayer - especially for my dear sister-in-law Yvonne fighting for her life
in battle with cancer in a Gold Coast hospital, Australia

God bless!
