Dear Friends
Yesterday
morning I was called to local Queen Elizabeth Hospital
for some urgent visits....including several in two different children's wards.
One particular case stands out: 13 month old baby girl...hole in heart
plus other complications....has 3 older brothers and sisters....father
working...mother staying in hospital 24 hours a day with baby (a hospital
requirement for someone to stay)...oldest of siblings 8 years old....father
taking one to work (it's school holiday time)...neighbours minding two
others....mother very low on physical and emotional energy...in fact...near the
end of her tether...no relatives in HK (she's from Mainland)...no one to give
her a rest from 24 hour stay in hospital (already there 5 days and nights)
During
discussion with mother and Catholic pastoral worker, I asked mother "what's
the most practical way to help you?" She said: "can you find
someone to take my place here at hospital for a few hours each day
so I can go home (not far from hospital) have a short rest (not much rest at
hospital...baby vomiting right through night) and see other children".
I was able to find a kind volunteer who went to hospital for 5 hours after
lunch. And thought occurred: there's a need for government/hospital/churches to
have a group of volunteers on call for such cases. If anyone knows of such an
existing group, please let me know. Pastoral worker also not aware of any such
group.
