Dear Friends
Last Sunday night I had a canteen meal with two men who sleep on the street. Well, not exactly on the street: in the under cover area of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre at Tsim Sha Tsui!
One man, aged 63, came out of prison March 23 after serving 30 (thirty) years. Government agencies are not being great to help him....one agency gave him HK$40 per day for two months....and another is due to give him HK$1,900 on August 3.....and he's on the list for a government flat on September 21. So, between Aug 3 and Sep 21, he'll have $1,900 to live on. But from May 23 to August 3...nothing....which is why he's "on the street". His wife and daughter have long disowned him. No one to help
On
Sunday night I bought him some clothes (he had only what he was wearing) and
gave him a little cash for some meals until Aug 3.
He had asked help from some charitable groups....but no help came.
He's been getting food from rubbish bins outside restaurants...including
McDonalds
The other man, about 30 years old, is originally from the Mainland. His parents in HK no longer can afford to support him...and he doesn't want to be a burden on them
Neither of the above two men is a drug addict. Both are clean and tidy in appearance ...they take daily free showers in Kowloon Park!
They say there are about 20 other men sleeping in the Cultural Centre area.
For
a long time I've dreamed of some sort of "Poor House" where people
like the above could get emergency help and stay on a temporary basis.
If you win the lottery, please give me a call!
