Dear Friends

A sad anniversary for me today. On this day in 2006, while I on was on annual holiday in Australia, two of my students in China drowned.
Two brothers, aged 8 and 6. Couldn't afford to go to local swimming pool, so they were swimming in a local water hole. Younger brother got into difficulties, older one tried to help him, both died.

This was during the summer holidays. Before the holidays, teachers had given the usual reminders about holiday safety: avoid playing with matches, be extra careful on roads, swim only in swimming pool etc

Maybe in the large plan of things they were called to Heaven, to escape the hell that was their home. Two months before they died, I was horrified to find that the older boy had been beaten with a coat hanger by his father. Photos here

Children's rights in China are on the statute books, but like most laws in China, are often not observed or followed up

Ben and Bernard in Heaven, thank you for a prayer today!
