Dear Friends

Yesterday at a HK prison I met an inmate from Syria,
where there is now a civil war taking place

Inmate is from the capital of Syria, Damascus, where St Paul stayed for a while. Inmate said that Damascus is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. I thought that Jericho (in Israel) is the world's oldest city...so I just checked Wikipedia and found that several cities claim to be the world's oldest city.  Which one is the oldest depends on whether you judge by date of foundation or fact of continuous inhabitation.

Inmate's family was originally Christian, from Palestine, but became Muslim about two hundred years ago when "everyone else was Muslim"

Inmate spoke of the famous Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, one of the most important and beautiful mosques in the world. In 2001 Pope John Paul II visited the mosque, primarily to visit the relics of John the Baptist. It was the first time a pope paid a visit to a mosque
