Dear Friends
As you go around Hong Kong, you often see a church or school run/sponsored by "The Church of Christ in China"
Yesterday
as I read a bit more of "Frederick" by Mark O'Neill
I finally understood where the name "Church of Christ in China" comes
from
In 1922 there were 140 different Protestant missionary societies working in China....with a wide variety of doctrines and practices, very confusing to the local people, an obstacle to the spread of the Good News
So, in 1927, sixteen of the larger societies...mainly Presbyterian and Congregationalist.....united to form the Church of Christ in China...a self-supporting local church without denominational labels and with locals in charge
The foreign societies had done well in producing a large pool of local clergy, doctors etc. The time had come for foreigners to move to the background in a support role, and at the same time to stop imposing European divisions on the church in China
