Dear Friends

In yesterday's blog I mentioned, with minimum details, the tragic death of a teenager on Friday night

Several of Hong Kong's Chinese papers, (including, disappointingly, Ming Pao),  yesterday provided all the details: name, age, home address, photo (MP no photo), dispute with parents etc.
The worst report is this one in the Oriental Daily

The teenager was a 14 year old girl, an altar server at a local parish.
She hanged herself.

On Friday night when I was with the family at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the family was desperately hoping the media would not publish this story.
I spoke to police at the hospital who to their credit did not call media to the hospital, but to their discredit (who else?) must have given details to the media (do they get paid for this?)

Such media reports have two effects:
  1. They deepen, intensify, aggravate the already unbearable suffering of the girl's family. On Friday night the agonizing grief of her parents, younger brother (13) and grandparents caused everyone in the emergency room, even experienced hospital staff, to cry

2. They have a copy-cat effect. Numerous studies have shown this.

Tonight after the usual gathering for ex-inmates, I'm due to have a meeting with a group of HK Catholics who I hope will take this issue on board and get some effective changes to HK's feeble, anemic press laws

On this 28th of the month, Jesus please bless the people of Beijing
(Please join me in praying for one part of China each day of the month)

My Bible Plan for today = The readings for the 30th Sunday of the Year
As we use these readings let's pray that we may see more clearly the love of the Lord and the needs of others

Thank you for a prayer

God bless!
