Dear Friends
The whole of yesterday was spent at Stanley Prison for the annual meeting of Hong Kong's prison chaplains - 9am to 4.30pm, with lunch 12.30-2pm
I skipped lunch in order to visit several dozen "Cat A" inmates at the prison....had known them well when they were in remand at Lai Chi Kok detention centre.
Did
the same after the meeting finished at 4.30...went to "Cat B" inmates,
where one of the men has the surname "bishop", so I can say I visited
a bishop!
Morning
tea I found myself at a table with Cardinal John Tong who gave the meeting's
opening address and stayed for the morning session.
I asked him had he recovered from the recent Synod. He said "not yet...and
I have to go back in 10 days" (for the Consistory to bless 6 new
cardinals).
Afternoon
tea I found myself at a table with Cardinal Joseph Zen who is a regular visitor
at the prison, and who attended the afternoon session.
I asked him how much longer the Pope will continue...and he said Pope is in good
mental state and Pope will retire if he feels he's not up to it.
Not a bad bit of hobnobbing for one day: two cardinals ...and a bishop!
