Dear Friends
This
is a time of shame and sadness for the Church,
a time for sackcloth and ashes, not pompous parading
So
much bad news about the Church keeps appearing
...sex abuse inquiries, Vatican not facing up to burning issues etc
I
find it difficult to stay interested in it all. It makes depressing
reading
Yet every Catholic must stay informed about the real situation
and do his or her bit to clean up the mess
And
the way to help with the cleaning up is to live our lives a bit better in the
future...especially by showing more care for the poor and by getting back to a
Scripture-nourished spirituality
For me this means getting on with the job of visiting prisons and hospitals,
caring for drug addicts and street sleepers, working on the Simple Bible
project, praying with the sick etc
May our increasing service of the poor be a way of making up for all the bad things that have happened
Maybe after the "Year of Faith" the Church could have a "Year of Humble Service" as a way of saying sorry to the wider community
------
On this
18th of the month,
Jesus please bless
the people of Shandong
(Please join me in praying for one
part of China each day of the month)
My Bible Plan for today =
The readings for the 33rd Sunday of the Year
Let's use these readings to remind ourselves of the shortness of life,
thereby gaining wisdom of heart
Thank you for a prayer
God bless!
