Dear Friends

Only three weeks to Christmas. For the past three decades at this time of the year I've had English classes of one sort or another....and I used to make a point to using Christmas material for most of December

This year no English class. I stopped English teaching at the start of this year in order to give more time to visiting prisons

Maybe not having English classes, Christmas English classes, is the reason I'm finding it hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner.

Church's Sunday readings not much of a help....no real mention of Christmas until Fourth Sunday of Advent (Dec 23 this year). More about this on file to be linked on tomorrow's menu

Anyhow....let's make an effort to prepare for Christmas as well as we can by a bit more prayer and a bit more service of the poor. On the prayer side: Pope Paul VI once said that Advent is the best time of the year to remember Mary in our prayers. On the poor side: Christmas is traditionally a time of generosity to the poor. I'm looking forward to my annual practice of some sort of Christmas day gathering/meal with the poor
