Dear Friends
Yesterday
I went to Queen Mary Hospital on Hong Kong Island to apply for a medical report
for an inmate at Lai Chi Kok Detention Centre.
Inmate is a Muslim from Pakistan....so I made the trip as a prayer for better
relations between Muslims and Christians, especially in Pakistan
Application cost HK$940 ...but I thought it was worth it. Inmate is a refugee, and has no family and very few friends in HK
On the way home, I stopped at the Catholic Centre in Central to collect copies of Catholic papers for inmates. While at Centre, I spent a few minutes in chapel saying thank you for two anniversaries: 48 years ago yesterday I left home in Brisbane for the seminary in Victoria....and 28 years ago yesterday I left Brisbane for HK!
Many
clear memories of both days, 1965 and 1985. In 1985 I was on a Qantas flight,
seated next to a Chinese HK student who was studying Year 12 at Iona College in
Brisbane where I had been teaching in 1984. Student was on way to HK for Lunar
New Year. We were seated next to a window, with a young man sitting in the aisle
seat. Turned out young man, from HK, had been studying at university in
Australia, and also was on way to HK for LNY. I asked the young man what
school he had been to in HK.
He answered "Notre Dame College"....the Oblate college I was due to
live and work at for the next 10 years. To be on the same plane, in the
same row.....just a co-incidence? Or Providence saying "yes...a good
idea for you to go to HK" ?
Same Providence has made many appearances over the past 28 years in HK....like yesterday! As I was kneeling at chapel, with head in hands...eyes shut...I felt a tap on my shoulder....a lady who wanted to give me something to help my work for the poor. She gave me two HK$500 notes....exactly enough to cover cost of the hospital bill an hour previously! I told her that her kind donation would pay for the Muslim man's bill....she was pleased...and said "use the change for a meal"...which was done last night
Thank
you Lord for the past 48 years...and the past 28 years!
..and..both anniversaries on Feb 14...the Lord is my Valentine!
