Dear Friends
Wikipedia has an informative article about the phrase "an elephant in the room", with the definition "Elephant in the room" is an English metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss
The
next pope needs to acknowledge the presence of many "elephants in the
room", such as (& this is not an exhaustive list - please feel free to
add more in comment box, below):
- the question of an out-of-control Curia
- the question of collegiality
- the question of compulsory celibacy for priests
- the question of pastoral care of divorced people
- the question of women's diaconate/priesthood
- the question of regular synods at all levels
- the question of the papacy having become an absolute monarchy
- the question of the Church being too Western/European
- the question of homosexuality in the priesthood and religious life (see
today's menu)
In order to look after his flock of sheep, the next pope needs to admit the existence of a herd of elephants
Just found...a new site: Elephants in the Living Room (of the Church) !
Come Holy Spirit...fill the hearts of the conclave cardinals with wisdom and courage!
