Dear Friends
One of
Hong Kong's most popular daily newspapers is Apple Daily.
Yesterday's front page had two main stories:
- the installation of President Xi and Premier Li in Beijing
- the first day of Pope Francis in Rome
I
asked a local Chinese man reading the paper:
"What do you think of Xi and Li?" Man angrily brushed his
hand over the paper, with a non-repeatable phrase about the Communist Party
Then I asked "What do you think of Francis?".
Man approvingly showed right thumb up.
"I asked why do you like Francis?"
Answer: "Because he will uphold peace and fairness and justice"
Final question: "Are you a Christian?" ....Man laughed and said "No way"
Exchange shows how well respected new pope is. HK media has had saturation coverage of his goodness, humility, simple life style etc
Exchange also shows how HK people are very circumspect, make that suspicious, when it comes to China's Communist Party leaders
Interesting that the two sets of leaders were side by side. Brought out the contrast with which they are regarded by HK people
God bless Pope Francis...and President Xi & Premier Li !
