Dear Friends
Today is "Divine Mercy Sunday" but there's something about the whole Divine Mercy movement that leaves me uneasy, that causes me to be a "doubting Thomas"
Some of the reasons for this uneasiness can be seen in this article and in this article, both by John Allen
DMS seems to cut across Easter, calling for meditation on the Passion of Jesus during Easter week, calling for Confession/Reconciliation just after Easter - when historically Catholics have been encouraged to go to Reconciliation before Easter. Seems strange to see lines of people waiting for Reconciliation on the Sunday after Easter. Didn't they go before Easter? Or have they had a problem in Easter week?
Then there's the "magic ticket to Heaven" aspect: say this, do this and you're totally forgiven forever.....with excessive inward-looking emphasis on personal salvation to the neglect of outward-looking daily living of the Gospel
See the comments here (re an article by Fr Eric Hodgens)
It will be interesting to see what Pope Francis speaks about today in his Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square
Will he give "a Divine Mercy Sunday" homily? Or will he speak about faith and Thomas as in the Gospel of today?
I suspect "Divine Mercy Sunday" is not Francis' cup of tea
