Dear Friends
Yesterday I encountered three groups of people buying and selling and using illegal drugs. Locations are an open secret in Hong Kong
1.
Before Mass at San Po Kong I went for a cup of coffee at McDonald's, opposite Ng
Wah Church.
Shared with the group there that two of their number recently passed through Lai
Chi Kok Detention Centre on way to 8 months holiday. Group knew the two
had been arrested, but didn't know the length of sentence
2. After same Mass, as I walked to bus stop from the church, I saw another group outside the nearby clinic. Group included a lady I'd met in custodial ward of Queen Elizabeth Hospital not long ago
3. Last night before and after the usual Sunday night gathering for poor people in Yau Ma Tei, I saw the usual ragged group outside YMT clinic
Such encounters are causing a growing conviction: if illegal drugs for these special groups could be provided in controlled centres, the need for such people to sell drugs to get money for their own habit would be gone .... so that there would be fewer sellers and buyers on the street...a win-win for everyone in the community (except the illegal drug gangs)
