Dear Friends
On the one hand I'm saying some extra prayers these days and nights for the Pope's safety and success in Brazil
On the other hand, as I watched him waving from the popemobile in Brazil....even though I know Jesus waved from a donkey on the ride down the hill to Jerusalem...I can't help feeling the "superstar" status of a pope is not such a good thing....especially regarding him as the focus during Mass
It's the same when I as a priest say Mass....the focus should not be on me...but on Jesus
The Pope is Jesus' special representative...yes...and should be given special honor and respect, yes
but
...I've just got this nagging feeling that the status, the superstar status of
the papacy, has gone too far....
and the papacy needs to be downsized...starting with the superstar status.
What do you think? Am I writing heresy?
