Dear Friends

Australia is due to have a general election on September 7

For the first time in more than 20 years I hope to vote, thanks to a change from the old rule which said "if you're away for more than 3 years...no vote" - unlike rules for US and UK where you can be away for much, much longer and still have a vote

But each day I grow sadder as I see the two main Australian political parties continuing their competition to see which can adopt the harsher policy towards asylum seekers

Their policies seem to be determined by one main factor: vote winning.
A harsh policy towards asylum seekers will win votes (which in itself is a sad indictment of Australian society)

A similar trend is seen in Europe as asylum seekers from North Africa arrive in Italy
and calls are being made for tighter boarder controls
...not to mention the US where "illegal immigrants" is a huge issue

What's the big picture?  Not the distorted picture of people smugglers ...people smugglers are a group who should attract a harsh policy

But what's the big picture?  Is it not about poor people trying to get to a place where they can have a safer and better life for their families?

Some day, everyone of us is going to hear either A or B:

A: "I was a stranger, and you made me welcome"

B: "I was a stranger, and you never made me welcome"

People in Group B are going to face the harshest of all controls at the Heavenly border
