Reflection 309

This article is all about promoting vocations to the priesthood
I used to do that...was very keen on it...can say 6 or 7 young men went to a seminary largely/partly because of my encouragement
But
in recent years I've stopped promoting vocations,
because at least 30% of priests leave the priesthood,
and their departure - before, during and after- is usually associated with great
distress to their families, themselves and other people
In the present set-up, recruiting vocations is like recruiting staff for the Titanic
One big iceberg: compulsory celibacy...the main reason why so many priests leave
c.f. The evil of compulsory celibacy
Jesus,
please help the Church face up to the iceberg, the elephant in the room which is
compulsory celibacy
