Reflection 258
Based on the Vatican II
document (Comments welcome here) |
This article gives the traditional teaching that
the Father sent the Son,
the Son sent the apostles,
the apostles sent the bishops,
the bishops sent priests
But
for some time now theologians have debated exactly how much of the present
priesthood is of God and how much is of man.
Post apostolic leaders like Ignatius of Antioch speak of a bishop-priest
arrangement....which supports the traditional view.
But some theologians argue that the words of Ignatius don't necessarily rule out
a wider concept of priesthood....whereby house leaders (men and women) are said
to have lead the Eucharist in early Church history
Meanwhile back on the ranch, today's priests continue to get worn out as their number declines and their jobs increase
Jesus, may the Vatican and the theologians be as concerned about helping today's priests as they are about arguing over history
