Reflection 267
Based on the Vatican II
document (Comments welcome here) |
This article talks about the supply of priests....hoping that Christians will never be like sheep without a shepherd...remembering how the apostles chose "suitable men"
The article also encourages priests to promote vocations
Well,
up until 15 or 20 years ago, I was a keen vocations promoter.
Can say I had something to do with 7 or 8 young guys going to a
seminary....5 of them ordained
But
then, as the years went on and more and more priests left,
I stopped promoting vocations. When I saw that about one third of priests leave
the priesthood....and saw the grief caused to their families as well as
themselves and others....I came to the conclusion that recruiting people for the
seminary was like recruiting staff for the Titanic
Like many others, I now believe that compulsory celibacy is the main problem - see my file The evil of compulsory celibacy
Like
many others, I now believe the answer to the vocation crisis is to get back to
what the apostles did - choose "suitable men".
See this
article re global shortage of priests and need to ordain married men
Jesus, please help the pope and Curia understand that what you made optional they do not have the right to make compulsory
