Yesterday here in Kuala Lumpur I met with another family of a
prisoner in HK. Said prisoner saw a FB advertisement looking for couriers to
deliver parcels overseas ... "two nights, three days, R5,000" ... and,
being short of money, took the job ... and is now facing about 3,600 nights ...
and the same number of days ... in a HK prison. Following the meeting I went to
a nearby Chinese church and enjoyed a chat with the local Chinese priest, asking
him to support the campaign to warn young Malaysians not to be fooled by FB
advertisements. About two thirds of the Malaysians in prison in HK are Chinese,
the rest are mostly Indians

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Hello from Malaysia!. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Judges
10-11: The
Israelites yet again served false gods,
and once more they were oppressed,
this time by the Ammonites. The
Israelites appealed to Jephthah to help them.
Jephthah was the son of a prostitute.
His brothers had driven him from home
and would not give him a share of their father's inheritance. Jephthah
went into exile and became a famous soldier. Jephthah
agreed to help the Israelites
after they agreed to make him their future leader. Jephthah
tried to reason with the Ammonite king,
but the king refused to negotiate a peace agreement. The spirit
of the Lord then came on Jephthah
and he led the Israelites to victory over the Ammonites.
Dear Lord, may
your spirit give courage to all leaders

Psalm
138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.
You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you.
I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered.
You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you
when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways:
"How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal.
Do not abandon us whom you have made.
Lord, when we remember how much
you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

Hebrews
13.8-21:
Jesus Christ is the same today as he was
yesterday and as he will be for ever. Do not let yourselves be led astray by strange
doctrines
that teach a different Jesus. Jesus died outside the city. Let us go to him
and share his rejection. Our life in this world is a temporary
arrangement, like a tent. We look for a permanent home in the life to come.
Keep doing good works and sharing your

Mark
2.1-12:
After some time Jesus returned to Capernaum.
Crowds quickly gathered at the house where he was staying. While he was preaching inside the house,
four men carried a paralytic on a stretcher to the front door.
They couldn't get in, because of the crowd, so they went up on the roof,
took off some of the roof covering, and lowered the stretcher in front of
Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the
paralytic "Your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders
present in the crowd thought to themselves "Who does this man
think he is? Only God can forgive sins". Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he
asked them "Which is easier? To say 'Your sins are
forgiven' or 'Get up and walk'? But to show you that I have authority to
forgive sins I now say: get up, pick up your stretcher and go home."
The man got up, picked up his stretcher and
walked out in front of everyone. The crowd said "We have never seen
anything like this".
Jesus, please heal my
friend.....(name)....who is a paralytic

Over
the past 50 years I have met many families carrying big crosses, but yesterday I
met one that would be near the top of the list. Their son being in prison in HK
is just one of their crosses. May Jesus' cross give them courage to keep going
day by day. Yesterday I also met two other families, also suffering from a
son in prison in HK. Please God this website's anti-drug campaign can reduce the

Judges
9: Gideon had seventy sons
by his wives and concubines.
One of his sons was Abimelech, son of a concubine. Abimelech became king
after murdering all but one
of his 70 half-brothers.
The half-brother who escaped was Jotham. Abimelech ruled over
Israel for 3 years.
Then God sent a spirit of discord
between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem. The leaders of Shechem
rebelled against Abimelech.
Abimelech started attacking and destroying their towns. Abimelech besieged the
town of Thebez.
The people of the town took refuge in a tower. When Abimelech tried to
set fire to the tower,
a woman in the tower threw down a large rock
which crushed Abimelech's head.
Abimelech got his armor-bearer to kill him with a sword,
so that no one could say he was killed by a woman.

Psalm
137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried,
remembering Zion.
On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our
captors, for songs.
"Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on
alien soil?

if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys.

12-13: Your ancestors were at Mount Sinai when God

But you already have one foot in the city of the living God, the heavenly

hospitality.
Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with

Mark
1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees
pleaded
"If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his
hand,
touched him and said "Of course I want to heal
you. Be healed!" The leprosy left him at that moment and he was
healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had
happened
(in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use
him politically). But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town
(for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district
would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who
are lepers
Listen
Reflection on the above readings: When Jesus was asked to heal, never once did he say "your sickness is your cross". What mother or father would say to their sick child "your sickness is your cross"? Parents and Jesus have the same mindset: "Of course I want you to be well"

Yesterday I visited a church just after the weekly Chinese Mass had finished. It
was lovely to see the joy of the people as they left the church. Maybe I need to
put that better: I don't mean to say they were happy that church was over! I
mean they had the happiness of people who have just been to a party. Hundreds of
them. Many families. People of all ages. I said to myself "this community
is alive"!

Feast
of the Epiphany

Yesterday in Kuala Lumpur I met with another family of a prisoner
in HK. I am encouraging the families to get to know each other and to support
each other. WhatsApp is a great help for this! But yesterday, more than once, I
had trouble saying "Kuala Lumpur" in English. Now my problem is not
using "Koala" but "Kowloon". Several times yesterday I said
"Kowloon Sentral" instead of "Kuala Lumpur Sentral" (a main
train station)!

Isaiah 59-60: Arise,
shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you,
though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your
light and kings to your dawning brightness. People
from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the
praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight

the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The

will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He
will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be

3.2-6: You have probably heard how I have been

has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was

Matthew 2.1-12: Jesus
was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months
after Jesus' birth, several wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They
said "Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it
rose and we have come to offer him honor." King
Herod felt threatened by this news. He knew from the Scriptures that the
promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem. So
Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would like to offer
honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star. The
star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where the child was.
The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They
offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their
own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to
Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

the Israelites asked him to be their ruler. He replied: "It is
not I who shall rule over you, nor my son;
The Lord must be your ruler". After Gideon's death,
the people of Israel again began

May the Good Lord grant eternal rest to Bishop Michael Yeung who
died yesterday. May his prayers in Heaven help us here on the other side of

Yesterday here in Malaysia I spent the morning at the
desk (... many phone calls needed to arrange meetings with families), then
I went to a prison to arrange a visit for next week, then I went to town
about two hours by train from KL where I met the family of a prisoner in HK ....
all the while checking messages from HK for news about Bishop Michael Yeung ....
which made it difficult for me to be happy about the many good things that
happened during the day.

Judges 7: Gideon prepared to go
to war with the Midianites.
But God told him to reduce his number of soldiers. The army was told
"Let anyone who is frightened or fearful go home". 22,000 men went home;
10,000 stayed. The Lord said
there were still too many.
"So many men might cause Israel to claim that a victory
had nothing to do with the Lord".
So Gideon got the men to go to the river to drink. All those who lapped the water, like a
dog, he put on one side.
These numbered 300. The rest knelt down and used their
hands to drink.
These were sent home. Gideon divided his 300 men into 3
groups,
surrounding the Midianite camp. To each man he gave a horn and an empty
water container,
with a torch inside each container. In the middle of the night, they
attacked.
They sounded their horns and smashed their containers,
holding a horn in their right hand and a torch in their left. The Midianites woke in terror,
thinking that the Israelites had a huge number of men. In their panic, the Midianites attacked
each other
as they fled the camp. The Israelites drove the Midianites
from the Israelite homeland.

God, thank you for the courage and leadership of Gideon

Judges 4-6:
After Sisera's forces
were defeated,
the land enjoyed peace for 40 years. But then the Israelites
again lapsed into idolatry,
and so they were oppressed by the Midianites for 7 years. The Lord then raised up
Gideon to rescue the people. Following the Lord's
instructions,
Gideon at night time destroyed the altar to Baal
in his father's house. When the Midianites
heard what Gideon had done,
they prepared to attack the Israelites. The spirit of the Lord
came on Gideon
and he rallied the Israelites. Gideon asked for a sign
of success in battle,
and said to the Lord: "See now, I
spread out a fleece of wool on the ground;
tomorrow morning, if there is dew only on the fleece
and not on the surrounding ground,
then I know you will deliver Israel by my hand". And so it happened the
next morning:
the ground was dry but the fleece was drenched with dew. Gideon asked for a
second sign,
requesting that the fleece be dry but the ground covered with dew. And God did what Gideon
asked:
the fleece stayed dry, and there was dew on the ground

man possessed by an evil spirit. The spirit shouted out "Have
you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth? I know who you are: the
Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out
of him!"
The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out

Happy New Year! I wish all dear readers every blessing for 2019!
Wed Jan 2
Hello again from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. My computer
is having the same problem as it had when here in June last year: it keeps
wanting to use "Koala Lumpur". I can't bear
it. Yesterday was a quiet day during which I spent some time at a church near my
hotel, asking the Lord's blessing on 2019. This was after lunch ... and church
was not empty.... many people paying visits for prayer .... giving the Lord
special time on a special day. After the church I went to a train station to buy
tickets for another over-night trip. Then at a cafe I spent quite a bit of time
phoning families to arrange visit times over the next week or so. Good sleep
last night ... always a peaceful sleep when you have your washing done and dry!

Readings are from
Simple Bible
Judges 4: After Ehud died, the
Israelites again began to stray from the Lord
and therefore again lost their freedom and peace. The Lord then used Deborah,
who was a judge and prophetess, to rescue the people. Deborah instructed Barak son
of Abinoam
to go and do battle with Sisera, the people's oppressor. Barak said he would go only if
Deborah went with him.
She agreed but then said that his hesitation would cause the Lord to give battle victory to a
woman, not Barak. When Barak's forces
routed those of Sisera,
Sisera fled and took refuge in the tent of Jael, wife of Heber. As Sisera slept from
exhaustion,
Jael drove a tent peg into his head and he died. So once again the Lord had
rescued the Israelites.
Dear God,
please give me more courage in the battle of life,
(and please protect and bless Barack
Obama!)

Psalm
133: How good and how pleasant it is
when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head,
running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon
which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing,
life for ever.
Dear Lord, please help all the
peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Hebrews
8-9: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant
predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the
Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of
Israel". Jesus
has come as High Priest of all the
blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like
priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our
redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead
actions,
to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart
and protect me

Mark
1.14-20: Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good
News from God.
"The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is
close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News." As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee,
he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew. Jesus said to
them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".
Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus.
Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother
John. He called them also to follow him. They left their nets and
boat and followed him.
Jesus, please bless all the
people who work full time as "fishers of men"

Reflection on the above readings: Today's reading from Hebrews about the blood of Jesus follows yesterday's Gospel when Jesus' blood was first spilt as he was circumcised

Yesterday I had a
laundry lunch: while my washing was in a machine at a "laundry
hub" near my hotel, I had lunch at an adjacent canteen. As an English
teacher ... and clothes washer ... I noticed that the word "laundry"
contains the word "dry" ... and "laund" comes from a word
meaning "wash" .... so I wish to propose that "laundry"
means "wash and dry", not just "wash" as the dictionaries
say!
