Yesterday here in Kuala Lumpur I attended a most important meeting with a local politician and family members of some young Malaysian prisoners in HK. The politician is doing a wonderful job trying to get assistance for all Malaysian prisoners on a number of fronts. Such co-operation by the families will please God also help qualify the prisoners for a discount from their sentences ... on the grounds of "assistance to authorities" as well as help for my anti-drug campaign. The politician is also working with the Star Media team in the preparation of their report on the issue of young Malaysians being recruited as drug mules. Report part one due to be released very soon!

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Samuel 4: Around this time, the Philistines defeated the Israelites in a battle. The Israelites then went to Shiloh and took the Sacred Chest of the Lord. They took the Sacred Chest into battle with them but the Chest was captured by the Philistines. In the same battle, Eli's two sons were killed. When Eli heard that his sons were dead and that the Sacred Chest had been captured, he fell backwards off his seat, his neck was broken, and he died.
Dear God, please don't let me cause unhappiness for my family

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

1 Peter 1.1-2: Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ, sends greetings to the believers living among foreigners. You were chosen by God the Father. You were made holy by the Spirit. You are obedient to Jesus Christ and are sprinkled with his blood. Grace and peace be with you more and more
Father, Son and Holy Spirit - thank you for life and faith

Mark 6.7-13: Jesus went on a teaching tour of the nearby villages. He sent out  his 12 special friends in 6 pairs, with authority over evil spirits. He told them to take only bare essentials for the journey. He said "If any place does not welcome you, as you leave that place shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them". The 12 apostles preached repentance. They cast out many devils. They anointed sick people with oil and healed them
Jesus, may every place welcome you and your messengers

Mon Jan 21

Yesterday morning I went to Kuala Lumpur cathedral where I attended Mass "from the pew" ... a good experience for a priest ... to experience Mass from the other side of the fence ... especially when the liturgy is all over the place and the sermon is long, boring and off the topic ... should make me try harder to do a better job from the altar area.
After Mass I mixed with some very friendly and concerned Nigerians who were most supportive of the anti-drug campaign. Then a meeting with some families of prisoners in HK .... encouraging them not only to support each other but to work together to get information that might help the prisoners in HK when they go to court.
By this time my phone said I already had covered 10,000 steps (... I had walked to the cathedral) but I brought up another 10,000 in the afternoon when I went "fishing" for some of the Big Fish who have put people in prison in HK. And only now do I reflect that such fishing might have influenced my meal last night at a local shopping centre: a salmon steak salad!

1 Samuel 3: One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the temple, the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel." The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am." Eli replied "I did not call you." Two more times the Lord called. Both times the boy went to Eli. Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening" the next time he heard the voice. The Lord told Samuel that Eli's family would be punished for the bad things they had done. The people quickly found out that the Lord was with Samuel and that Samuel was the Lord's prophet.
Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice, your voice in the Bible, in my conscience and in other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Even when the whole world seems against me, I can go to bed and sleep easy, knowing that you protect me. O Lord, please rescue me from people who plot against me. Lord our savior, please bless everyone who needs help.
Lord, thank you for your protection and help

James 5.13-18If one of you is in trouble, pray. If you are happy, sing a psalm. If someone is sick, send for the elders of the church. They must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, and this will heal you. The heartfelt prayer of a good person is very powerful. Elijah prayed for rain, and rain came
Jesus, please help sick people have the opportunity to receive the "Anointing of the Sick"

Mark 6.1-6: Jesus and his disciples went to his home town of Nazareth. On the Sabbath he went to the prayer hall and began teaching. People in the prayer hall were astonished at his teaching. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He is just a carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, Joset, Jude and Simon. His sisters also are here." And they would not accept him. So Jesus said to them
"A prophet is despised only in his own country". Because of their lack of faith, Jesus cured only a few sick people there. He was amazed at the lack of faith in Nazareth.

Jesus, please help me be happy about your gifts to others

At Mass in KL cathedral yesterday I was behind a Filipino couple with their 12 month (?) baby son and 5 (?) year old son. 5 year old totally restless and totally disconnected from all the prayers/readings/songs etc. But there was one part of the Mass where he became an active participant: he had the job of putting the family's donation into the offering bag when it was passed around!

Today I'm hoping to meet some more families of young Malaysian prisoners in HK for drug trafficking. And if I'm able to encourage the families to spread the message "Don't take drugs to HK" by social media as well as among relatives/friends ... i.e. take part in the anti-drug campaign, then when their sons/daughters are sentenced in HK I can write a support letter to say that both they and their families took part in the campaign ... and ... if they have a kind judge, they will be given a discount from their sentence ... 3, 6, or even 12 months for campaign help.

c.f. readings for Sunday 2

Isaiah 62: About Zion I will not be silent, about Jerusalem I will not grow weary, until her integrity shines out like the dawn and her salvation flames like a torch. The nations then will see your integrity, all the kings your glory, and you will be called by a new name, one which the mouth of the Lord will confer. You are to be a crown of splendour in the hand of the Lord, a princely diadem in the hand of your God; no longer are you to be named "Forsaken", nor your land "Abandoned", but you shall be called "My Delight" and your land "The Wedded"; for the Lord takes delight in you and your land will have its wedding. Like a young man marrying a virgin, so will the one who built you wed you, and as the bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so will your God rejoice in you.

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens. Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor.
Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

1 Corinthians 12.4-10: The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts. Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith. John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold more than 70 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus.

To go with today's Gospel: The "brothers of Jesus" mentioned in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles are regarded as Jesus' cousins by most Catholic scholars and as real blood brothers by most other scholars. Whatever their relationship, how come they don't get a mention at the Cana wedding?  Wouldn't they have been invited? If Jesus' disciples got a green card wouldn't his "brothers and sisters" also have got one? One scholar has a most unusual explanation: the groom was ... you guessed it ... a "brother" of Jesus! No wonder Mary was concerned! No wonder Jesus helped out! A family member was in need of urgent assistance! ... with a sub-theory: the shortage of wine was caused by the presence of .... Jesus' disciples!? Jesus "new family" caused a problem for his birth family!?

In mid 2017 Malaysia's population was about 31 million, of which about 60% were Malay, about 20% were Chinese and about 10% were Indian. Chinese used to be the majority ... but now only 20% because of the exodus of Chinese to Singapore and other places ... and a low Chinese birth rate ... and a high Malay birth rate. Of the recent Malaysian drug mules in prison in HK, about 30 are Chinese and about 10 are Indian. No Malays as far as I know. Which means the international drug trafficking problem in Malaysia is a Chinese-Indian problem .... which has Nigerian finger prints all over it.

1 Samuel 2: Hannah praised God for giving her a child: "My heart rejoices in the Lord. The Lord, our fortress, is holy. Don't speak proudly, for the Lord knows what's in our hearts. The Lord breaks the power of the strong. He gives strength and victory to the weak. He blesses the barren woman. The Lord raises the poor from the dust, and gives them a seat of honor with princes. The Lord guards the steps of good people, but scatters bad people in their pride." The Lord blessed Hannah
and she gave birth to three more sons and two daughters. Her son Samuel grew up in the temple.
The temple priest at that time was Eli. But Eli's sons were bad men. They stole the people's offerings to the Lord.

Dear God, please bless good people like Hannah, and please help bad people like Eli's sons to stop being bad

Psalm 2: Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the nations, listen to God's voice. Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love the Lord

James 5.1-6: Are you rich and powerful? Then start weeping for the miseries that are coming your way. Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are being eaten by moths. Mark
5.21-43: A prayer hall official, Jairus, fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and save her life". While Jesus was on the way to Jairus' home, people arrived and told Jairus "Your daughter is dead. No need to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard this and said to Jairus "Do not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus allowed only Peter, James and John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was weeping and wailing.
Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is not dead, but asleep". Everyone laughed at him. So he got them all to leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3 companions, he went to the place where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her "Little girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at once.  She was 12 years old.

Jesus, please give us more faith to pray for the sick ....even for children who have died!

In HK my alarm is usually set for 6.20am. But here in Malaysia I've just been waking up when it's dawn. (Disclaimer: dawn in Malaysia these days is around 7.15am!). Over the past few days I've spent much time processing photos taken with the families I've met ... so that when I get back to HK I can please God print and post those photos to the prisoners in HK ... such photos usually being a source of joy, albeit with sadness, for the inmates.

1 Samuel 1: Each year, Elkanah and his two wives Hannah and Peninnah,  went to Shiloh to worship the Lord. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was barren. Each year at the temple, Peninnah would taunt Hannah because she was barren. One year at the temple, Hannah prayed in great distress: "God, if you give me a child, I will dedicate him to you". Not long after, Hannah conceived a son whom she called "Samuel". When Samuel was weaned, she took him to the temple
and gave him to the priest there to serve the Lord for the rest of his life.

James 4.13-15: Avoid talking like this: "Tomorrow I'm going to another town, to do business there for a year ". You don't know what will happen tomorrow. Mark 5. 25-34: A large crowd gathered around Jesus near the side of the Sea of Galilee. In the crowd was a woman who had suffered from bleeding  for 12 years. She had spent all her money on doctors, but they  had been unable to help her. She had heard about Jesus. She came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. "If I can touch even his clothes, I will be healed" she said to herself. As soon as she touched Jesus' cloak, the source of the bleeding dried up at once. Aware that power had gone out from him, Jesus turned round and said "Who touched me?" The woman fell at his feet and told her story. Jesus said "My daughter, your faith has restored you to health. Go in peace and be free from your illness".
Jesus, please help sick people touch you by prayer

Ruth 3-4: Naomi told Ruth to go to the threshing shed of Boaz and to sleep there at the feet of Boaz, this action symbolizing her wish to marry Boaz. When Boaz discovered Ruth there during the night, he praised Ruth for wanting to continue Elimelech's family. The next day, Boaz went to the gate of Bethlehem and met the only man who preceded him in the legal right to marry Ruth. The man agreed to let Boaz marry Ruth and so Boaz took Ruth as his wife. Mark 4.35-41: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Naomi (first reading) had lost her husband and two sons, but she did not give up on life. She  showed great resourcefulness to help her daughter in law Ruth to find a husband ... and from her tragedies came a great blessing: her great grandson was King David .... and an even greater blessing: her descendant was the Messiah, Jesus. God has a way for bringing good out of tragedy ... so long as we don't give up but keep going

Ruth 2: Naomi and Ruth arrived in Bethlehem at the time of the barley harvest. Ruth went to the fields to look for left-over ears of corn. She came to the attention of Boaz, Elimelech's clansman. Boaz was a kind man and he told the men harvesting his crop to let Ruth take some sheaves of corn, not just left-overs. As one of Naomi's closest relatives, Boaz was in a group of several men from which one man was required by law to marry Ruth and produce children for Elimelech.

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.

Mark 4.1-20: One day Jesus told the people this story:  A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. Jesus explained the story:
People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Reflection on the above readings:  "Greed kills the word" (Gospel) is a good summary of the video at top of today's menu describing how greed was the cause of the 1929 stock market crash and subsequent depression

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
