There is great sadness in the O.M.I. (Oblate) congregation around the world after the barbaric murder of people during Sunday Mass in the O.M.I. Cathedral of Jolo in the Philippines on January 27. There are three Oblate bishops in this report condemning the attack - Cardinal Orlie Quevedo, Bishop Lito Lampon .... and Bishop Ben de Jesus (photo on wall ... murdered outside cathedral in 1997)  ... and see below

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: HK Customs and Excise ... and the Year of the Pig! It is on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Samuel 8: When Samuel grew old, the people asked him to find someone to be their king. Samuel was not happy that the people asked for a king. Samuel also warned the people that a king would impose taxes and have many rights over them. But the people insisted on having a king. The Lord then told Samuel to give the people a king.
Dear God, you are our only true King

My recording of this reading

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others. Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.
Dear Lord, thank you for so often rescuing me

Listen

Titus 2.11-14: God's grace has made salvation available for the whole human race. We must give up everything that does not lead to God. We must delete our worldly ambitions. We must be self-restrained and live good lives here in this present world, while we wait in hope for the blessings that will come with the Coming of the glory of our God and savior Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from wickedness, and to purify us so that we would have no ambition except to do good
Jesus, please help me give up everything that does not lead to you

Listen

Mark 7.1-23: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Last Sunday's bombing of the cathedral in Philippines (and other such incidents) make us pray today's words from the Psalms: God, please stop bad people from hurting others

--------------------------------------------------------

Long ago a pope described Oblates as "specialists in the most difficult missions". Jolo, Philippines is one such mission. Oblates who go there are in one of the greatest danger zones for today's Christians.  A new OMI bishop is about to be consecrated for Jolo .... I wonder how well he sleeps these nights! May the Lord protect him and his people ... and give peace to Jolo.

Yesterday afternoon I attended the Yau Ma Tei monthly prayer for healing gathering ... and the weekly YMT "Pizza Party" gathering for the poor which was a simple gathering out on the street because the usual school hall was not available. The rest of the day I spent on a backlog of mail and other office jobs.

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Samuel 7: The Sacred Chest was taken from the town of Beth-shemesh to the town of Kiriath-jearim, to the house of Abinadab, whose son Eleazar was consecrated to guard the Chest. After 20 more years, the Israelites again longed for freedom from the Philistines. Samuel gathered all the Israelites at Mizpah, where after prayer, battle was joined with the Philistines who were defeated. The Philistines no longer came into Israelite territory. Samuel was judge over all Israel for the rest of his life.
During Samuel's time, the Philistines no longer troubled Israel. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites. Each year Samuel went on circuit around the country to judge cases of law. He would then return to his home town of Ramah and continue his work as a judge from there.

Dear God, please give the world more leaders like Samuel

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Listen

Titus 2.1-10: It's your job to preach the behavior that goes with sound doctrine: the older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love. The older women should be teachers of good behavior, avoiding scandalmongering and too much wine. They should be an example to the younger women in their love for their husbands and children. Younger men should be moderate, with yourself setting an example of sincerity for them. Slaves should be obedient to their masters, and avoid petty thieving.
Jesus,  help me be a good person, a good Christian

Listen

Mark 6.53-56: When Jesus got out of the boat on the other side of the lake, people recognized him and news of his presence spread quickly. From all around that area, sick people were brought to him. Wherever he went, to village or town or farm, they laid down the sick in open spaces, begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. All those who touched him were healed
Jesus, please heal my sick friends ...(names)... by letting them, through prayer, touch your clothing

Reflection on the above readings: The name "Jesus" which means "God saves" can also be regarded as meaning "God heals" since "save" in Biblical language also means "heal"

--------------------------------------------------------

As I read the Pope's words (above) about "living life off-line" I thought of the wonderful volunteers who serve each week at the Sunday afternoon gathering for the poor ... as yesterday they served rice boxes on-line to more than 200 poor people who queued on the street outside Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School because the school hall was not available

Sun Jan 27

Yesterday I made a start on a mountain of office work waiting for me when I returned from Malaysia the previous night ... starting with the printing and posting of photos to prisoners in HK ... photos I took when I met their families in Malaysia. Today I'll try to process mail from the past four weeks ... around 50 letters waiting to be read ... many of them with requests for assistance with court cases, studies, communication with families etc.

Yesterday I also met with some asylum seekers in need of help ... HK government deadfully slow (= dead slow) in assisting them with school fees for their children (one case) and in providing ID papers (another case).

c.f. readings for Sunday 3

Nehemiah 7-13: The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt and doors were set in place in the wall. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar Nehemiah assembled all the people and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses. This was the first time that most of the people had heard the words of Moses' Book. The people were grateful to God and praised him with great happiness. The people also promised God that they would serve him more faithfully in the future. But while Nehemiah was away on a visit  to the king the people and leaders became careless about the Law. When  Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law
Dear God, may we find joy and strength in reading the Bible and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

1 Corinthians 12.12-30: A human body is made of many parts: arms, legs, muscles, eyes etc. Every part is important and needed for the body to be healthy. The church is like a body. We are the body's members. Some of us are apostles, some prophets, some teachers etc. The members of the church must care about every member of the church. Everyone is important. The spiritual health of each member affects the health of the whole body
Jesus, help me understand how your church is like a human body

Listen

Luke 1.1-4: Dear Friend of God, there are  already many  reports written about Jesus. These reports come from  people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News.
Jesus, help me understand your Good News

Listen

Reflection on the above readings:  Today we speak of "fake news". Truth is a casualty as people circulate fake news. The writings of people like Nehemiah and Luke help us know what is true and what is false.

Much of my time in Malaysia was spent with Chinese families ... and 30% of Malaysia's population is Chinese ... with Chinese shops/restaurants everywhere ... so, much in common with HK. But more than once in Malaysia I had trouble using Cantonese since the local Cantonese is not quite the same as that in HK .... and my Cantonese is not exactly perfect. I remember one day using Cantonese to ask a Chinese lady something and she replied "I don't speak English"!

Sat Jan 26

Hello from HK where I arrived safely last night after flight from Kuala Lumpur. Thank you Jesus for the trip to Malaysia. Lord, please bless all whom I met on the trip and all who made the trip possible and anyone who helped in any way .... especially the local KL Star Media R.AGE team with whom I spent so much time over the past month. Even yesterday the team was at hotel for my packing up and train trip to airport .... for final reflection interview about the trip. Team's report, part one, now due to be released after Lunar New Year. Report is not just about my trip but about the whole drug trafficking issue in Malaysia. Please God the report will do much good on many fronts.

2 Timothy 1.1-5 (for feast of Timothy and Titus): From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. I always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself.
Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Listen

Titus 1.1-9: From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine.
Jesus, please help all pastors be good "elders"
Listen

Mark 6.45-52: After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake. Jesus stayed to send the crowds away. Then he went up into the hills to pray. When it was dark, the boat was far from land, but battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind. Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid." Then he got into the boat, and the wind stopped.
Jesus, please give me courage by helping me remember that you are in my boat (my life)

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Some Christians say it is wrong to drink alcohol ... even though Jesus changed water to wine .... and even though Paul advised Timothy to have some wine for his stomach illness ... and even though Paul advised Titus to choose as elders men who were not heavy drinkers!

Yesterday morning before going to Kuala Lumpur airport for flight to HK, I went to a local Indian doctor to have wax removed from my ears (... after two days of using Waxsol ear drops to soften the wax). Doctor said wax caused by dust and pollution. Doctor advised against using cotton buds  ... they just cause wax to solidify. Last time I had such a procedure was about 15 years ago in Australia!

Yesterday I paid a final visit to a nearby church to thank the Lord for all the blessings of this trip, to ask a blessing on everyone I've met on this trip ... and a blessing on all who made the trip possible.

c.f. readings for Conversion of St Paul

Isaiah 51-52: Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Recording

Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him.
Jesus, please help me understand how unkindness to others is unkindness to you

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved. Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils, they will have the gift of tongues, they will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be unharmed if they drink poison, they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

1 Samuel 6: The Sacred Chest of the Lord was in Philistine territory for 7 months. Then the Philistines put the Chest on a cart pulled by 2 milch cows. 1 Peter 1.13 - 2.3: Delete rubbish from your minds. Control your thinking. Trust more in Jesus. Live the way he wants you to live, not like the way you used to live before you learnt the truth. Be good and holy. Let your love for each other be real and from the heart. You are born again by the everlasting word of the living God. Never be spiteful, or deceitful, or hypocritical or envious and critical of each other.
Jesus, help me live the way you want me to live

Mark 6.30-44: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

After a visit to a nearby church yesterday morning, I took a train to where some "Big Fish" sometimes swim ..... no luck. Then I went some nearby districts, meeting quite a number of African groups who were very friendly and most supportive of my campaign ... and again no luck. But during the course of the afternoon I did get one valuable piece of information which should be of assistance to some prisoners facing a case in the HK Court of Appeal in the next few months.

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 95: In some people we see an ostentatious preoccupation for the liturgy, for doctrine and for the Church's prestige, but without any concern that the Gospel have a real impact on God's faithful people and the concrete needs of the present time. In this way, the life of the Church turns into a museum piece or something which is the property of a select few.

1 Samuel 5: The Philistines took the captured Sacred Chest to the shrine of Dagon in one of their towns. Next morning, they found the statue of Dagon on its face on the ground, in front of the Sacred Chest. They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place. But next morning he was down again, with his head and hands cut off from the rest of his body. While the Sacred Chest was in the Philistine town, the people there were struck with tumors and many people died. The people told their leaders to take the Sacred Chest back to Israel where it belonged.
Dear God, please help everyone know that there is no other God but you.

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.

1 Peter 1.3-9: Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his great mercy, he has made us his children. He has prepared a place in heaven for us to live with him forever. This is a cause of great joy for you, even though life in this world has many trials. You did not see Jesus, yet you love him, and you believe in him. Faith gives you confidence to look forward to the salvation of your souls

Mark 6.17-29: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded.
