c.f. readings for Lunar New Year's Day

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Listen

John 1.1-14:
From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God.
Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

("In the beginning was the Word")

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Lunar New Year is like Christmas - a time for family gatherings... remembering our parents .... and remembering where all life came from, from our Heavenly Father.

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Samuel 13-15: Not long after he became king, Saul began doing things that caused Samuel to stop supporting him. Samuel clearly told Saul what the Lord wanted Saul to do, but Saul insisted on doing things his own way. Saul seemed more concerned about his own popularity than about being obedient to the Lord. This displeased the Lord,  and he rejected Saul.
Dear God, please help  us not to disobey you. "Your will be done".

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm): The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

Philemon 9-25: While here in prison, I have helped someone you know to become a believer. He is carrying this letter - Onesimus. I'm sending him back to you, no longer your slave, but your brother in Christ. Please welcome him as you would welcome me. And let me pay for anything he stole from you. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Jesus, please put an end to slavery in the world

Listen

Mark 8.27-38: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied
"Some say you are one of the famous prophets".
Jesus then asked them "And who do you say I am?"  Peter answered "You are the Christ". Jesus then explained to them how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Peter knew Jesus was the Christ. But still he denied Jesus. As Christians we need knowledge ... it is really important. But by itself it can't get us "over the line" in difficult times. After Pentecost Peter had more than knowledge, he was powerfully blessed by the Holy Spirit. And so we can pray:  Come Holy Spirit and give us courage and commitment, as well as knowledge.

Two afternoons ago at HK airport as I joined thousands of passengers waiting for flights, I had a "conspiracy theory" about the real reason for "you must arrive 3 hours before your flight" policy at airports: to hold people captive for 1-2 hours in a giant shopping centre ... to get them to buy from the shops!

c.f. readings for Sunday 4

Jeremiah 1: Jeremiah lived in a village not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah's father was a priest. God said to Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I have appointed you as prophet to the nations." Jeremiah said to God: "Lord, I do not know how to speak. I am so young." God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I now put my words into your mouth. Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak. Do not be dismayed by anyone. I am making you strong. You must confront Judah's kings, priests and people. They will oppose you, but will not overcome you,
for I am with you."

Lord, please give special courage to people who speak your message for the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Listen

1 Corinthians 13.1-13: If I am the most brilliant speaker, but don't have love, I am just a gong booming. If I understand all mysteries, and if I have a faith that will move mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing. Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous, never boastful, never conceited, never rude or selfish. Love does not take offence. It's not resentful. Love delights in the truth. Love is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. Love is virtue Number One, greater than faith or hope.
Jesus, please help me love like you

Listen

Luke 4.23-30: People in the prayer hall rejected Jesus. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He's just the son of Joseph". Jesus replied "No prophet is ever accepted in his own country". The angry people then took Jesus by force to the edge of the hill on which  Nazareth  was built. They planned to throw him down the cliff. But Jesus escaped from them and went away.
Jesus, please forgive people who reject you. Please help them accept you

Yesterday morning I again journeyed to the High Court ... this time for the case of a man from South America .... and only at the Court did I find out that a woman from South America was due to be sentenced in the afternoon, so I went home and prepared a support letter for her which included this FB post by the No More Mules team featuring a letter from her: Lima popcorn seller a cocaine mule in HK. Post had more than 17,000 views!

Tomorrow night I'm due to go to Melbourne for a meeting. Due back HK Friday night Feb 8 please God. Will be interesting to be in Australia for Lunar New Year (Feb 5)! Thank you for a prayer

Readings for Feast of Presentation

Malachi 3.1-2: The Lord God says this: Look, I am going to send my messenger to prepare a way before me. And the Lord you are seeking will suddenly enter his Temple.
Jesus presented in the Temple on this day, we praise you Lord
My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the  universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Hebrews 2.14-18: The Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us. By his death he took away the power of the devil. He himself experienced temptation. He is able to help us when we are tempted.
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

Recording

Luke 2.22-32: When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel".
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord

Fri Feb 1

Two days ago I had a discouraging time at the High Court building when two cases went badly in the Court of Appeal. But yesterday in the High Court I was most encouraged when a kind judge gave much praise to my anti-drug campaign and said a South American defendant would qualify for extra discount for information provided about the Drug Lords who recruited her in South America. Judge ordered HK Customs to pass on the woman's information to authorities in South America! (c.f. my Ming Pao article a few days ago on this topic!). Judge adjourned the case to see if the woman's information leads to action in S. America.

1 Samuel 12: As the elderly Samuel handed over leadership to Saul, he said to all the people: "In future it is the king who will lead you. The Lord is my witness that I have never treated you unjustly. You must follow the Lord with all your heart. Do not turn your back on the Lord's way. Do not follow false ways."
Dear God, thank you for the life of Samuel. Please help all people to follow your way, not follow false ways

Psalms 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.

Jesus, bless all house church groups and meetings

Mark 8.22-26: In the village of Bethsaida, a blind man was brought to Jesus. His friends begged Jesus to touch him. Jesus took the man by the hand and led him outside the town. Jesus put spittle on the man's eyes and placed his hands on the man's eyes. "Can you see anything?" asked Jesus. The man was starting to see and replied "I can see people. They look like trees, but they are walking about". Jesus then placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and he saw clearly. He was healed and could see everything clearly.
Jesus, heal my friend ....(name)...who is blind

Thu Jan 31

After attending two appeal cases yesterday morning at the Court of Appeal (for a woman and a man from Africa) I came away quite discouraged by what for me is an unfair system. Best if I don't say any more at this stage. As I left the High Court I met a kind barrister who invited me for a drink  .... and gave me some good news to pass on to two of his clients ... both of whom I was due to see and did see yesterday afternoon in the custodial section of a local hospital. In between HC and hospital I went to Tsim Sha Tsui to buy some IDD cards for prisoners who don't have any visitors or friends in HK.

Police chief says water cannons ready to use soon. How sad that HK has to resort to this measure. Only a handful of countries in the world have water canons! Is this draconian measure really needed in HK?!

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 97: We need to make the Church constantly go out from herself, keeping her mission focused on Jesus Christ, and her commitment to the poor. God save us from a worldly Church with superficial spiritual and pastoral trappings!

1 Samuel 11: The people of Jabesh-gilead told Saul that the Ammonites were threatening them. The spirit of the Lord stirred up Saul and he led the Israelites to a great victory over the Ammonites. Samuel and all the people then went to Gilgal where Saul was again proclaimed king.
Dear Lord, may your Spirit stir us up to do good things

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever. Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven.

Mark 7.31-37: Jesus traveled through the area south of the Sea of Galilee. A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him. Jesus took the man aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears and put spittle on his tongue. Then he prayed and said "Be opened". The man's ears were opened and his speech became normal. The people said "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak".
Jesus,  heal (..name..) who is "deaf and dumb"

Reflection on the above Bible readings: "Good works" features in today's letter from Paul to Titus ... just as it features in the letter of James. Maybe because some of the first Christians did not understand that real religion means good works

There's so much depressing news lately ... it's time for an extra smile ... which I heard at a meeting recently: Man saw the Titanic about to begin its voyage .... so he called out "It's going to sink! It's going to sink!" People around him told him to keep quiet but he called out even more loudly "It's going to sink! It's going to sink". So the people around him had him evicted ... from the picture theatre!

1 Samuel 9-10: Among the men of the tribe of Benjamin there was a very tall and very handsome man named Saul. Once when he went in search of his father's stray donkeys, he met up with Samuel. The Lord had told Samuel that he would meet Saul, and that he should be anointed as king. And so Samuel took some oil and poured it on Saul's head. He told Saul that the Lord had chosen him to be king. Samuel presented Saul to the people. The people acclaimed Saul saying "Long live the king!"

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Titus 3.1-7Remind everyone to be obedient to government officials; to be ready to do good at every opportunity; not to go slandering other people or picking quarrels; to be courteous and polite to everyone. There was a time when we too were ignorant; when we lived in wickedness and ill-will, hating each other and hateful ourselves. But then the kindness and love of God our Saviour were revealed, and God saved us because of his compassion. God saved us by the cleansing water of rebirth, and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit whom he has poured over us through Jesus Christ our Saviour. So we are justified by his grace, and look forward to eternal life

Jesus said to her "For expressing such great faith, you can go home happy. The devil has gone out of your daughter". She went home and found the child lying on a bed, and the devil gone
