2013-12-03     A moving story

Parents and teachers often say to children and students "Sit still!"
Someone who can't keep still is "fidgety", and has "ants in their pants".
But in fact sitting still is impossible for us humans! We are never still!

This is because we happen to be on a large lump of rock called the earth
which is
moving in its orbit around the sun at about 108,000 kph.
That means we are travelling at about 30 km every second ....something like going from Stanley to Lo Wu in one second!

And that's not the whole story. Our solar system, to which the sun and earth belong, is revolving around the centre of the Milky Way at a speed of 774,000 kph. That means we are travelling about 2,150 km every second ....something like going from Hong Kong to Beijing in one second!

And more yet: The Milky Way, our galaxy, is just one of billions of galaxies in the universe. The Milky Way is moving around the universe at about 600 km every second.....something like going from Melbourne to Adelaide in one second!
So.....we are always moving, never still!
