2014-09-30    Mixed feelings about October 1

Tomorrow is the National Day of the People's Republic of China, which might better be called the National Day of the Party's Republic of China, since most wealth and power are in the hands of the Communist Party.

No wonder Hong Kong people have mixed feelings about October 1. On the one hand they have a great love for China, its culture, its history, its language, its achievements. But on the other hand Hong Kong people are sad that citizens in China are denied so many basic freedoms.

October 1 mixed feelings are most strongly seen in two groups of Hong Kong people: the university students who are sacrificing their time and energy and talents to fight for the preservation of Hong Kong's basic freedoms (freedom of speech, freedom of the media, freedom of assembly etc).

The other group being the mega-rich elite who recently went to Beijing to kowtow to President Xi Jinping: this group cares only about preserving its wealthy status.
