On July 1, 2003, half a million Hong Kong people marched in protest at a proposed national security bill that was seen as a threat to the basic human rights of HK citizens.

Tomorrow being International Human Rights Day, this is a good time to re-read the 30 inspiring articles of the United Nations 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  The full text is here: http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/

Recently I watched a powerful video from Australia, the Sydney Peace Prize lecture by barrister and human rights advocate Julian Burnside: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/bigideas/stories/2014/11/21/4133386.htm 

After detailing how the Australian government is denying basic human rights to asylum seekers and others, Burnside quotes a British House of Lords judge who said that the greatest threat to society is not terrorism, but government attacks on human rights. No wonder so many HK people march each July 1!
