September 5, 2017Co-location .... history repeating itself

During my early years in HK I often visited the centres of concern groups working inside the Kowloon Walled City. I still clearly remember the rows of unregistered dentists who operated (no pun intended) on the perimeter of the City.

The inside of the City was a maze of dilapidated buildings where crime of every type took place, controlled by triads. But the HK police were reluctant to enter the City because by a strange quirk of history the City still belonged to China.

In 1984 China and Britain agreed to the demolition of the City and for its area to belong to HK. It didn't make sense to have a piece of China in the middle of HK. A bit like someone else owning a room in your home....not exactly convenient.

Yet this is what the coming co-location station will be like. And its supporters even have the nerve to claim it will make life more convenient for HK people! I fail to understand why the present excellent system needs changing. "If it's not broken, don't fix it".
