2019-03-12  No. 1 enemy of the media is ..... ?

Media freedom is restricted in many countries, but dictatorial governments are not the main enemy of the media in today's world.

The main enemy is apathy: more and more people are not interested in serious issues; they are interested only in superficial or sensational stories. Social media is now their main source of information.

So they don't read/view "serious stuff", and media which publishes serious stuff has suffered a huge decline in readers/viewers. Which means less revenue. And for some media the only way to survive is to go "down market" and publish material which catches people's attention.

So there's less and less investigative journalism as our troubled world goes into "dumbing-down" mode
