Wounded Witnesses (c.f. The Wounded Healer)

Oscar Romero (Dec 16, 1979):
Let us not forget, dear Christians, that the church was born of sinners. The church is holy, because it has God's Spirit giving it life, but it is sinful and it needs conversion, because we make it up, humans tending toward evil, and at times perhaps with a past that shames us. But once we are converted, we try, we try!, to follow the Lord. We don't follow him as yet with perfection, but the effort to follow him is what makes a true disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ

Joy of Gospel 24:
The Church which "goes forth" is a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first (cf. 1 Jn4:19), and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. Such a community has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father's infinite mercy.

Easter Vigil Homily, 15 April 2017, Pope Francis:
True, we carry within us a promise and the certainty of God's faithfulness. But our faces also bear the mark of wounds, of so many acts of infidelity, our own and those of others, of efforts made and battles lost.

Everyone needs to be touched by the comfort and attraction of God's saving love, which is mysteriously at work in each person, above and beyond their faults and failings (Joy of Gospel, 44)

Joy of Gospel 76: The pain and the shame we feel at the sins of some members of the Church, and at our own, must never make us forget how many Christians are giving their lives in love

The Joy of the Gospel No. 83: The joy of the Gospel is such that it cannot be taken away from us by anyone or anything (cf. Jn 16:22). The evils of our world - and those of the Church - must not be excuses for diminishing our commitment and our fervour. Let us look upon them as challenges which can help us to grow.

Each of us is like the USS Yorktown, damaged in battle (Coral Sea) but patched up and ready to fight (and sacrifice itself) in Battle of Midway

Joy of Gospel 85: While painfully aware of our own frailties, we have to march on without giving in, keeping in mind what the Lord said to Saint Paul: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness".
