Some
Traditionalists are sensing the end of a kind of golden age in recent Church
history. The riskiness of the Gospel is a challenge to
those who seek solace and security in fixity and elitism. The Tradition is not a
mummified corpse. It is alive and developing because it is an integral part of
the story and identity of the living People of God.

A
developing thought:
what to make of people like 'Fr Z"?
It is disturbing to
see the junk that is published on websites
like Fr Z's Blog (notice
he takes apart and mocks Pope Francis' Easter Vigil homily).
The
growing number and following of such sites is a concern.
What can we do? As usual: first thing is pray - pray that the warped
minds posting on these sites will see the light; pray that such sites will
not damage the unity of the Church; pray that bishops will stop ordaining
warped minds.
And we can follow the example of Jesus. Right through his ministry he was
dogged by warped minds out to trick and trap him. He gave them a piece of
his mind from time to time, and let the ordinary people see the hypocrisy
of his adversaries. But he didn't stop his ministry and concentrate
full-time on the warped minds. He got on with his work and didn't let the
warped minds stop him from working. We too must avoid the trap of being
distracted by people like Fr Z.
Dialogue with such people is near impossible.
See David Timbs' excellent summary of such people at

This ritual of washing feet made its modern
appearance with the reform of the Easter Liturgy in 1956. It
had not been seen since the Middle Ages.
From the time when Canons
of the cathedral washed the feet of beggars, through to the substitution
of a gift of money instead of washing, to the Rite we now use on Holy
Thursday, our appreciation of this action has become somewhat blurred

He
saw and believed
To believe that Jesus is
alive means to commune with Him, to recall His words recorded in the Gospels,
and to sense His presence when everything tries to tell you that He is absent.
Such faith can only spring out of your personal relationship with Jesus, of your
trust in Him. The beloved disciple saw and believed, because he remembered and
trusted

GOOD FRIDAY
Godlessness
and Good Friday
Ron Rolheiser OMI
Good Friday can seem like
the triumph of evil over good.
And in our complicated world,
evil can often seem to be winning. But Good Friday is not called
"Good" for no reason: it's because the Cross shows God's
goodness in loving and redeeming us.
See also this
beautiful piece from "Proof of Heaven" which shows the real
situation of evil
in our universe.

EASTER
VIGIL
There are about 3,000 people on Death
Row in the US.
Many countries no longer have a Death Row, since the death penalty
has been abolished. Yesterday as I shared some Good Friday
thoughts at a service for prison inmates, it struck me that when
"Adam & Eve" choose death instead of life, they
consigned themselves and their descendants to Death Row. A
staggering thought: I was born on Death Row! Meaning: no
access to eternal life, Heaven shut. Then as in A
Tale of Two Cities and as in the true story of St
Maximillian Kolbe, someone took my place and I was freed
from Death Row. Someone died in my place...on Good Friday....and
then rose from the dead to destroy the power of death. "And we
will live for ever more because of Christmas Day" ...and Good
Friday...and Easter Sunday"

Pope's foot kissing!
Final thought:
last night as I went for a walk through a market area in Hong Kong where
people in their hundreds were enjoying lavish meals, I couldn't help
thinking that a majority of people on this planet know little about, or
care much about, Good Friday. I thought too how the organisation entrusted
with spreading the news about Good Friday - the Church - has lost
credibility and relevance for so many people on this planet. So...all
grace and protection to Pope Francis as he tries to reverse this trend!
